Using AI for Design: A Practical Framework
A clear framework for using AI in design projects — when to generate, when to refine by hand, and how to keep the final work intentional.

AI in design is most useful when it is assigned a specific job. Treat it as a junior collaborator with unlimited stamina but no taste. Your job is to give it clear tasks, judge the results and finish the work by hand.
Use AI for exploration, not final art
The strongest use case is early visual territory exploration. Generate ten directions in an hour, compare them with the team, kill eight and develop two. The final asset should almost always be rebuilt in a controlled environment where you own every layer.
A simple framework for every project
- Define: write the design problem before opening any tool.
- Generate: produce broad options with loose prompts and references.
- Select: choose directions based on strategy, not visual appeal alone.
- Refine: rebuild the chosen direction with proper files, grids and specs.
- Verify: test in context and check legal, technical and brand constraints.
Protect the craft layer
Kerning, hierarchy, spacing, material choice and print preparation are still human work. AI can suggest, but it cannot understand the physical or emotional consequence of a millimetre. The handoff moment from generation to craft is where good design separates from average design.
AI gives you options. Design is the decision that turns an option into a solution.
Work with me
I help brands turn creative AI into campaigns, packaging and films that actually perform.
